El Tinto Golf Course (Cancun Country Club, Nick Price Design) – Championship Layout
El Tinto is a championship-style course near Cancun Airport, with significant bunkering, water features and a layout that rewards solid ball-striking. It appeals to golfers who enjoy a more structured, traditional round rather than a relaxed resort-style experience.
Important note for visitors:
El Tinto currently does not allow outside rental clubs, and guests have reported being questioned or delayed at check-in when arriving with non-house equipment.
Because of this policy, I do not supply rental sets for this course — this avoids any arrival issues or guests paying for clubs they may not be permitted to use.
For a smoother and more rental-friendly experience at a similar price point, many visitors instead choose:
✔ Iberostar Cancun — well-kept, vacation-friendly layout, lagoon views, food & drinks included, and no equipment restrictions.

🏌️ Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the best golf courses in Cancun?
Cancun and the Riviera Maya feature world-class courses such as Riviera Cancun, Playa Mujeres, Iberostar Paraiso, Puerto Cancun, Mayakoba, and Hard Rock Riviera Maya. Each offers unique scenery — from oceanfront holes to jungle fairways.
Best course? That’s subjective — if you shoot a good round somewhere, you’ll always like that course more! However, based on feedback from my customers and personal preference, the top three would consistently be Mayakoba, PGA Riviera Maya, and Iberostar Paraiso.
That said, you won’t be disappointed whichever one you choose.
2. How much does it cost?
There are no “cheap” municipal-style courses like you might find in the US or UK. All Cancun golf courses are high-end and immaculately maintained, and the price reflects that quality.
Expect to pay $150–$350 USD, depending on the season:
-
High season: November to April
-
Low season: May to October
Afternoon tee times (after 12:30–1:00 PM) are usually about 20% cheaper, but note some courses close around 5 PM.
Some hotels offer guest deals with local courses — even “free” golf — so check our blog for details.
3. What should I bring?
-
Tees: Usually provided by the course.
-
Golf balls: Available on-site but expensive — we sell refurbished balls close to cost.
-
Mosquito spray: Essential in rainy season (most courses border mangroves or lagoons).
-
Sun protection: A hat and sunscreen are must-haves in the Cancun heat.
-
Clubs: Bring or rent from us — all our TaylorMade sets have premium Golf Pride grips ideal for the humid climate.
4. Do courses include food and drinks?
Some do, some don’t. Iberostar Cancun, Iberostar Paraiso, and Moon Palace include food and drinks in the green fee. The others typically include bottled water, and all have drinks carts circulating for purchases.
5. Do all courses have ocean views?
Not all. The best ocean views are at Mayakoba, Puerto Cancun, and Playa Mujeres. Riviera Cancun borders the coast, but its fairways are more lagoon-side than beachfront.
6. Are the courses challenging or okay for beginners?
Most are designed for tourist golfers, not tour pros. Since grass doesn’t grow naturally here, courses are built over filled-in jungle or mangroves — meaning the fairways are bordered by lagoons or dense vegetation.
You won’t find much rough, but most courses mark these areas as red-stake penalty zones rather than out-of-bounds. That means you take a penalty drop, not stroke-and-distance, which helps speed up play and keeps things enjoyable.
Fairways are generally wide and forgiving, making them suitable for mid- to high-handicappers.
7. What’s the easiest course?
Iberostar Cancun is the easiest for most golfers — it’s open, playable, and enjoyable for every skill level.
8. What’s the hardest course?
Riviera Cancun Golf Club is officially the toughest by stroke index. Bring extra balls — if it’s not in the fairway, it’s likely in a mangrove (and maybe near a crocodile!).
9. Are crocodiles aggressive, and which course has the most?
Crocodiles (technically American alligators, but called crocs locally) appear on most courses except PGA Riviera Maya, Hard Rock, and Mayakoba. They’re not aggressive — they stick to lagoons and won’t bother golfers.
10. What wildlife will I see?
Expect to spot crocodiles, coatis, spider monkeys, deer, flamingos, and parrots — every round is a tropical nature tour.
11. Do courses have caddies?
Only El Camaleón Mayakoba offers professional caddies. All others operate as self-drive cart courses.
12. Do Cancun golf courses include carts or transport?
Yes, shared carts are always included in the green fee. Transfers to and from the course can be arranged through your hotel or our delivery service.
