Golfing in Cancún is incredible — warm sunshine, beautiful scenery, and courses carved through jungle, mangroves, and lagoon-side fairways. But if you’re used to playing in the US, UK, or Europe, a few local quirks might catch you off guard.

After helping thousands of visiting golfers, here are the Top 5 Tips every guest should know to make their Cancún round smoother, easier, and a lot more fun.

1. Follow the Dress Code (It’s Easy, Don’t Stress)

Cancún’s dress code is relaxed, but still follows normal golf standards:

  • Collared shirts required

  • Smart golf shorts only — no beach shorts or swim trunks

  • Closed shoes — no sandals or open-backed shoes

  • Tennis shoes are perfectly fine if you don’t have golf shoes

Pro shops make great souvenirs, but shirts usually start at $100 USD+, so best to arrive

prepared.

2. Respect the Sun (It’s a Different Level Here)

Cancún sunshine means business — on the course it can feel 20–30% hotter than you expect.

Bring:

  • Sun cream

  • A hat or cap

  • Plenty of water

Avoid dark clothing unless you want to slow-cook yourself on the back nine.

Sunny days on the fairways — bring a hat, sunscreen, and extra water

3. Bring Bug Spray (Especially Near Mangroves)

Mosquitoes can show up in the morning, evening, and rainy season.

Courses here are surrounded by:

  • Mangroves

  • Jungle

  • Lagoons

  • Water hazards

A quick spray keeps you comfortable and bite-free — especially helpful on lagoon-side holes.

4. Bring Extra Golf Balls (Trust Me on This One)

Grass doesn’t grow naturally in Cancún — all fairways are carved through mangroves or thick jungle.

You rarely get:

  • Adjacent fairways

  • Open bailout areas

  • Places to “look for a ball and pretend you found it”

If your shot drifts offline, the ball usually disappears instantly with zero chance of recovery.

And please… don’t reach into the mangroves or water trying to retrieve it.This is Cancún — sometimes the “floating log” has teeth 🐊😅(They’re usually not near golfers, but still… keep your distance.)

Bring extra balls and enjoy your vacation round without stress.

If your ball goes into the jungle, consider it a generous donation to the local wildlife.

5. Expect a Relaxed Pace — It’s Vacation Golf

Cancún golf tends to move at a chilled, tropical pace. A few reasons:

  • Tourists stopping for photos

  • Narrow fairways and plenty of water

  • Carts being mandatory

  • Groups learning their way around new courses

This is especially true at courses with hotels on-site, where special “guest golfer” deals sometimes bring out beginners and casual players who are just enjoying their vacation morning on the course.

Take your time, enjoy the scenery, stay patient, and embrace the vibe. This isn’t tournament golf — it’s Cancún vacation golf.
